Mystic Ocean Adventures, a 501C nonprofit organization based in Channel Islands Harbor, California, is now accepting applications for the position of Educator/Deckhand aboard the 110-foot schooner Mystic Whaler. We are looking for an energetic and dedicated individual who will contribute to creating immersive learning experiences that emphasize Living History, Experiential Learning, and S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). This is a part-time role requiring 25 hours per week.
About Our Mission
Founded in 2021, Mystic Whaler arrived on the Central Coast of California with a vital mission: to use sailing and sea adventures to promote S.T.E.A.M. understanding, environmental responsibility, teamwork, self-confidence, and nautical skills for the communities of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, with a special focus on youth. We believe our local environment serves as a platform for personal growth, and we offer a variety of educational programs to connect our community with the region's greatest natural resource, the Santa Barbara Channel.
Position Responsibilities
This role involves preparing the vessel for sailing, monitoring passenger safety, following the captain's instructions, and participating in routine vessel maintenance. You are expected to provide excellent customer service to all passengers. During educational programs, you will welcome and orient students, assign watch groups to each class, ensure that small group lessons are taught accurately and to a high standard, and confirm that every crew member is knowledgeable about the vessel's history and can share that history with the public.
- Delivering outstanding educational and enjoyable experiences to individuals of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Collaborating with our Educational Manager to bring our unique hands-on programs to life.
- Assisting with sailing, mooring, anchoring, and docking the schooner.
- Understanding and following all policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Helping with various maintenance projects and caring for educational equipment.
- Participating in daily chores, including cleaning and custodial tasks on the vessel.
- Maintaining and upholding a safe and drug-free environment.
Program and Itinerary
- Half-day and full-day sails with students and local companies, teaching marine ecology, climate science, and marine biology.
- Three-hour public sails.
- Deck tours.
- Fundraising events.
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience in education and working with youth is preferred.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be comfortable working in various outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be a positive coworker capable of living in close quarters.
- Must enjoy working with people and be able to effectively interact with passengers of all ages.
- Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills that convey positive energy.
- Must be willing to submit to pre-employment drug testing and a background check with negative results. All crew members will be enrolled in a random drug testing program for the duration of employment.
Required Certifications
- CPR certification.
