Cloacina is seeking a Wastewater Design Engineer with a strong technical foundation in biological wastewater treatment to join our energetic and dedicated team of engineers and designers. In this role as a wastewater process engineer, you will conduct design evaluations for wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal systems to appropriately engineer our membrane bioreactor package treatment systems. The work involves refining our standard products and processes, as well as brainstorming and developing innovative systems to address industry demands. A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering is preferred, though other engineering disciplines are acceptable with relevant experience. The ideal candidate is passionate about the environment and enhancing community water resources, possesses a background or interest in wastewater treatment design, wastewater process computer modeling, wastewater treatment operations, mechanical design, and is curious, solution-oriented, dependable, and self-motivated.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Design systems to safely, efficiently, and effectively treat wastewater, remove harmful substances, and return water to the ecosystem.
• Assess the need for wastewater treatment systems based on current and projected future flows.
• Assist our partnering engineering firms with overall site layout and system specifications.
• Review and critique water and wastewater treatment system proposals, plans, and designs.
• Conduct appropriate cost-benefit analyses for assigned projects.
• Prepare and review Process and Instrumentation Drawings of system equipment.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of system control narratives.
• Collaborate with contractors and government agencies regarding the construction of new treatment systems.
• Conduct studies related to the collection, treatment, or distribution of water or wastewater.
• Provide government agencies with technical support and subject matter expertise on water resources and treatment.
• Maintain knowledge and subject matter expertise.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to design safe, efficient, and effective treatment systems.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
• Ability to run wastewater modeling software (GPS-X, Biowin, or similar) and/or willingness to learn.
• Thorough understanding of applicable government environmental and safety regulations.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required (civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred).
• At least three years of related experience required.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

The wastewater industry can be hazardous due to exposure to biological and chemical hazards, as well as physical dangers, including but not limited to confined spaces, slips, falls, wet and/or humid conditions, high and/or low altitude, moving mechanical parts, high and/or precarious places, fumes and/or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, vibration, sewage, epoxy coatings, solvents, and excessive noise levels. Employees may come into contact with wastewater that contains human waste. Wastewater contains various bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause diseases in humans and animals. Workers can be exposed through contact with wastewater, aerosols containing pathogens, or contaminated equipment. Wastewater treatment processes also involve the use of various chemicals, some of which can be toxic or corrosive. It is imperative that employees wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols. While not mandatory, it is also highly recommended that employees stay current with vaccinations, including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, and Diphtheria.
