Requirements

Candidates must satisfy one of the following employment criteria:

  • One year of experience performing the complete range of responsibilities comparable to a Judicial Assistant II with the Court; OR
  • Successful completion of college-level coursework or equivalent specialized training in legal terminology, legal procedures, and court protocols; OR
  • Any combination of training, education, and experience that equips the candidate with the necessary knowledge and skills.

Knowledge of: office practices; basic mathematics; legal terminology; court regulations and filing processes; requirements for court documents; laws, policies, and procedures related to all types of trials and court hearings; managing case files, dockets, and court schedules; computers, software applications, and automated databases.

Ability to: maintain confidentiality; apply sound judgment in performing court-related tasks; focus on details; understand, explain, and adhere to various detailed procedures; organize work tasks; build and sustain professional, courteous working relationships; set work priorities; guide, train, assign, and review the work of others; operate a computer and related equipment.

Examples of Duties

  • Attend court sessions and record minutes of actions and proceedings.
  • Review ledgers, reports, and other financial documents for technical errors and accuracy.
  • Maintain court records and files, and assume responsibility for evidence.
  • Select and poll jurors, administer oaths, and document jury service.
  • Inform attorneys and the public about case statuses and provide procedural guidance.
  • Prepare and review various court documents for correct format and content.
  • Compile court calendars and/or schedule cases for hearings.
  • May lead, train, and/or assign tasks to less experienced Court Assignment clerks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

In addition to the base salary, employees in this role receive:

  • The Court covers 100% of employee health, dental, and dependent/family insurance premiums.

  • A biweekly Court contribution of approximately 32.47% of gross wages toward the employee's mandatory retirement account (SBCERS Plan 8).
