University of California, Irvine Research: Music and Stress Study

We invite you to participate in our mental health research. Complete a single phone interview and receive compensation.

Study Overview

This research explores how music practice and performance relate to daily stress levels. Participants will fill out a short online questionnaire and take part in a brief phone discussion regarding mental health and stress management.

Compensation for Participants

Those who take part will receive $10 after completing the interview. Payment will be sent via email within 4 to 6 weeks following your interview.

Eligibility Criteria

You may join the study only if you satisfy all of the conditions below:

  • Are 18 years of age or older.
  • Reside in the United States.
  • Are a professional musician, defined as fulfilling at least two of these in the past 12 months:
    • Earned a minimum of $5,000 from music performance, recording, teaching, composing, or production.
    • Averaged at least 2 paid music performances per month.
    • Identify music as your main occupation.
    • Hold membership in a professional music organization or union.
  • Have a minimum of 8 years of experience on your primary instrument or with your voice.
  • Are currently engaged in music practice or performance, defined as spending at least 6 hours per week on music activities, averaged over the last 3 months.
  • Your musical work primarily involves either improvisational or score-based performance.

Exclusion Criteria

You are not eligible to join the study if:

  • Your main musical activity is DJing, production, or loop-based performances that primarily involve selecting or manipulating pre-recorded tracks.
  • Your primary performances are sound bath or ambient formats that do not require active real-time musical decision-making.
