Summary

We are looking for a Medical Assistant – HIV/STD Counselor to deliver integrated patient care and counseling services. This position is vital for connecting HIV-positive patients to medical treatment and offering essential HIV/STD testing along with risk reduction guidance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is mandatory.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program approved by the California Medical Board.
  • Completion of LA County’s Division of HIV and STD Programs’ HIV Test Counselor Certification must be obtained within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Understanding of HIV/STD prevention, medical language, patient care techniques, blood draws, and sterile procedures.
  • Ability to perform risk evaluations, deliver patient-focused counseling, and safeguard private information in line with HIPAA rules.
  • Excellent communication skills and capacity to collaborate with diverse groups.
  • COVID-19 vaccination and booster, or an approved medical/religious exemption is necessary.

Main Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients, help with paperwork, schedule appointments, and keep medical records up to date.
  • Offer pre-test and post-test HIV counseling, and carry out HIV/STD risk assessments.
  • Perform blood draws, collect samples, and give medications and injections as directed.
  • Set up exam rooms, record vital signs, and support physicians during patient examinations.
  • Create plans to connect and retain HIV-positive individuals in consistent medical care.
  • Document testing records and equipment logs as required by the agency and funding sources.
  • Adhere to referral monitoring procedures to ensure patients receive follow-up care.
